1MW gas generator set: Mobile, silent and low OPEX

This versatile HIMOINSA HGS-1030 NG/LPG generator is able to work with both NG and LPG without loss of power. The design of the 40-foot container has given priority to operation and maintenance, which means there is no need to install any external elements. It opens on both sides, leaving the entire generator in view and facilitating maintenance intervals of up to 1,500 hours.

HIMOINSA has developed, in close collaboration with rental companies, a 1MW gas powered mobile solution. A compact unit with all ancillaries built into a standard 40' HC soundproof container. The gas engine significantly reduces carbon emissions giving rental companies a tool that helps them to reduce their carbon footprint without sacrificing power or availability.

“We have designed a power solution with the ability to adapt to various gas qualities, as well as to Emergency, Prime or Continuous applications. It has been designed to adapt to all types of climatic conditions, such as tropical environments, desert areas or high altitudes, for example, which means it can run in a vast number of locations.

It is an extremely versatile unit with very low operating costs that does not require assembly, just a gas supply and a power output”, says Manuel Aguilera, Global Gas Unit Head, who insists on the need for rental companies to have units in their fleet that can operate with gas and in a multitude of scenarios and projects.

Easy maintenance and low operating costs

The designers of the HGS-1030 NG/LPG always kept the ease of transport, installation and operation of the unit in mind. The entire unit is built into a 40' HC ISO container and is transported on an approved trailer, thus avoiding transport and installation cost overruns. To ease maintenance, the large book-style side access doors allow free access to the entire generator set and to the hydraulic kit, thus simplifying any technical or maintenance tasks.

The HGS-1030 NG/LPG gas generator makes it possible to reduce operating costs thanks to its 1,500 hours service intervals, which significantly reduces travel and labour costs. Another aspect that helps to reduce OPEX is the lower cost of fuel (NG or LPG), which is much more competitive than diesel.

    Natural gas and LPG

This generator can operate on both natural gas and LPG thanks to ignition maps that can be adjusted by the renter and stored in the Siemens engine control system. The user can select the type of gas available in the application via the touch panel and obtain maximum net power output thanks to the unit’s excellent carburation and regardless of which gas is used.

Thanks to these adjustments and the engine design, the generator set delivers the same power level for both Natural Gas and LPG, something rarely seen in the gas powered generation industry at this power level.

"This represents a clear advantage for the rental company, as it means it does not reduce its income, since it continues to deliver 1MW to its customer regardless of the fuel used”, Aguilera goes on to say. This is, therefore, an aspect that is greatly appreciated by the sector, as most units with similar characteristics do not offer this possibility and either require two separate solutions or a high level of derating.

"We have designed a power solution with the ability to adapt to different gas qualities with a design intended to adapt to all types of climatic conditions. It is an extremely versatile unit "

    Features

The HGS-1030 NG/LPG has a built-in 56-litre, low compression V-16-cylinder Siemens engine with a double bearing Stamford alternator and flexible coupling for maximum durability, strength and vibration-free operation.

    Integrated Silencer

    3-way Valve

It also incorporates a hydraulic kit designed to cool the HT-LT engine circuits (high and low temperature) as well as temperature and pressure sensors throughout the circuit, expansion vessels to stabilise the pressure and three-way valves to control the flow of cooling water. Finally, the hydraulic system features a dual-circuit horizontal electro radiator integrated into the container.

The certified gas train has been designed to work with both types of gases and includes:

    • Manual ball valve.
    • Gas filter.
    • Pressure gauges at the gas train inlet and outlet.
    • Pressure regulator and stabiliser.
    • Double solenoid valve with two pressure switches for low-pressure or overpressure events.
    • Special start-up/shutdown sequence to maximise safety.

The unit is controlled via a DEIF control unit and two touch screens programmed in special configuration by means of modules that allow it to run in isolation, in parallel with other generators and/or the power grid. Thanks to these monitors, the user can check the status of the unit and make any necessary adjustments to the operating parameters.

As the generator set is designed for island operation, it is equipped with an oversized battery system that allows heat to be evacuated from the engine room by powering the emergency fans in the event of a sudden shutdown.

    Comprehensive and compact solution

In addition to the flexibility in terms of fuel and as a differentiating element, HIMOINSA was requested to integrate all the components, including the silencer, inside a 40' HC soundproof container that avoids the need for assembly each time the unit is used.

The container consists of two independent and insulated rooms that ensure the area in which the mono block is located is tightly sealed. In the ventilation room, a dual-circuit tropicalised horizontal radiator has been installed with six fans powered by an electronic engine and with variable speed allowing the speed of the fans to be adjusted in line with the cooling requirements, thereby reducing noise and maximising electrical efficiency.

The engine room features an air renewal system that uses ATEX fans, also powered by an electronic engine, and controlled by a temperature sensor as well as by gas and smoke sensors that switch it on if necessary, even when the unit is not running. Finally, an additional oil tank ensures the correct oil level in the crankcase during the 1,500 h maintenance interval.
